Description

The lesson starts with an activity about job and workplace in which the ss match ten images and then go on to build two sentences about what they do and where they work. This activity is followed by a listening that mostly focuses on the appropriate use of prepositions regarding where we work, how we go to work and who we live with. What follows is a combination of fluency and accuracy practices through a jigsaw puzzle activity, writing and speaking at the very end.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of work . In addition, the lesson plan places importance on writing as a productive skill.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of present simple in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The ss are presented four images of people along with their workplace. The SS should make guesses and come up with two answers as regards what they do and where they work. The activity starts with a demo by the teacher. They take their time and answer the questions in pairs for three minutes. Next, I have three of the SS to come to the WB to write the answers.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I start with three questions about the photo e.g. what does he do? where does he work? and how does he go to work?. I will write the questions on WB. Next, i will elicit some answers and get the ss to generate some ideas. Then , i write them on WB. The ss go through a listening in which they are exposed to the TL . After some choral and individual drills they focus on the table in exercise 2. The exercise will be done in pairs. Once they are done with that they go on to write three sentences along the lines of the examples in exercise 2. They check up their sentences in pair to make sure their examples are correct. Next, i call upon some of them to read their sentences for the other ss. In case there are nay mistakes,i will write them on WB so as to bring their mistakes to their notice.

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The ss are divided into groups of three and I pass three short texts to each group. They read they read the texts and fill the blanks using mostly prepositions. Then, the SS read out their texts to the other members of the group. In the end, I call upon three students to read their texts in order to check the answers in class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Each s is given a card on which there is some information about their name, country, job, workplace and the means of transport they use to go to work. The ss are required to write a short text using the information on the card. The ss are asked to stand up and mingle to talk to at least two partners. They have to ask appropriate questions to receive answers. We check some of the answers in class.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I provide the ss with some images and i get them to imagine what their jobs are , where they work, where they live and how they go to work. The activity begins with a demo by the teacher.
