Grammar
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, ss learn how to use somebody, anybody and nobody etc. Given the fact that this is a very common grammar in English, the ss might be familiar with these words but still use them incorrectly. That is why I need to set the context to check their level of familiarity with this grammar first and then provide them with further explanation and practice.

Materials

Abc Handouts-pictures- board- markers- computer and the Video projector

Main Aims

  • To provide the ss with a listening model so that they could use it to tell an anecdote about a party

Subsidiary Aims

  • To use pronouns (everywhere, anything etc.) accurately

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In order to set the context, the ss will be provided with some certain sentences cut out from a text and the actual text itself with some gaps on it. They are then asked to fill the gaps with the sentences. Then, ss must give a short summary of the text about a party that I myself have been to.

Test #1 (5-8 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The ss will be given a Gap-fill handout so that I could gauge their prior knowledge of the TL. TL is grammar of everybody, anybody, nobody and somebody etc. Here, the ss are expected to finish the task in 2 minutes individually and then check their answers with their peers. Next, I will ask for the ss to come to the board and write the correct answers in the gaps.

Teach (10-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I am going to clarify the TL by paying special attention to the areas that ss found most difficult. I am going to write some sentences on the board, exactly the same sentences from the task in the warmer and then ask for what they can find in common between the sentences. Next, I will explain the correct use of the grammar, the difference between Any and Some. Then ask CCQs. Who do you think.............? Do people ............. at home? Does Mike want to ............?

Test #2 (3-6 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

In order to make sure that the ss have learnt the the grammar they will be a given a controlled practice of the grammar. They will be given a HO to work on individually and then check the answers in pairs. Here,I could do a little bit of error correction again if they had any.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with the correct use of the TL

The ss will listen to an audio track about Paul talking about a fancy dress party he went to, then they need to match the questions with their answers. Next, they check their answers with their partners.

Free practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide the students with a free practice of the TL

They must use the listening model to tell their partners about a party they have been to.
