Description

In this lesson, students review and practice present simple and present continuous through discovery of jobs and employment. The lesson starts with an exercise reviewing present simple and present continuous. Then, students will be describing pictures related to jobs in groups using these tenses. Finally, through a role-play speaking activity, learners will practice asking and answering questions about jobs with the same picture.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for speaking fluency and accuracy in the context of jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for present simple and present continuous in the context of jobs

Procedure

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

After remembering the students what they learnt during the previous lessons (Use of the present continuous, presents simple and stative verbs) I explain them the following exercise. I ask them to work on their own and circle the correct answer, then check the answers with their partner. We will check the answers with the whole class then and I will ask them to explain why they chose this one and show the reason using the slide and WB. Then I ask them to work in pairs and make a question with every sentence. We correct the answers with the whole class to see if they understood.

Productive Tasks (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

For the next activity, I show them a picture of somebody a farmer on the whiteboard with the projector. I ask the whole class to describe the picture by using present simple and present continuous (asking them questions if they are stuck). I write some answers on the whiteboard using present simple and present continuous forms. Then, I ask them to form groups. I explain that I will give them different pictures and would like them to describe it the same way we just did. I will monitor during the activity to help with some vocabulary and see if they understood the task.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

After 5 minutes, we will correct the exercise with the whole class using the different pictures shown on the whiteboard with the projector. I will ask each group to give me descriptions of the pictures they worked on and give them some more examples, focusing still on the structure of the sentences.

Productive Task (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

For the last activity, I will set a role-play: "Who is who" game. I will ask to half of the students to come in front of the whiteboard. They will have give them a picture of a person working (same jobs but different pictures than the previous exercise). They will act as if it was their job. The other half will come in front of them and ask questions to find out what their job is. I will be monitoring to check the accuracy and fluency (make notes to use those during the feedback). After 3 minutes, I will take back the pictures change the role, by giving those randomly to the second half. They can start again the activity.

Extra activity (3-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

If there is some time left, I will make another round with the previous activity.
