  • To use collocations with make and do from the listening to speak about festivals

Subsidiary Aims

  • To listen to someone describing a festival to answer gist questions and find specific information

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher opens the lesson with a description of what they did last New Year's Eve, answering the questions in ex.1. Teacher puts students into pairs to describe what they did the year before on New Year's Eve using ex1 - a,b,c. Teacher asks a few students for FB

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it understandable

Teacher asks the students if they know anything about Chinese New Year. Teacher puts up pictures on WB. Teacher asks students look at the statements in ex.2. Teacher puts students into groups of 4 to discuss and make guesses about the 7 statements in ex.2. Students will guess whether they think the statements are true or false and each make a note of this.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students listen to check to see if their guesses about Chinese New Year are true. Teacher goes over which statements are false. Students listen a second time to correct the statements that are false. Teacher goes over answers as a wc.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students are put into pairs to rewrite the statements in ex.2 with information about New Year's celebrations in their own country. Teacher asks a few students to share their information with the class.

Vocabulary Activity #1 (7-10 minutes) • To introduce students to collocations used in the listening

Teacher asks students if they can remember from the listening what the answers to ex.1 are. Teacher goes over answers as a wc. Teacher puts up 'make and do collocations handout' on wb and hands it out to the students. Teacher explains how these collocations are used.

Vocabulary Activity #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more detailed practice

Ask the students to individually answer ex.2 questions. Teacher puts students in pairs to ask each other the questions and check their answers. Teacher asks students who have finished to write answers on wb.

Vocabulary Activity #3 (7-10 minutes) • To have students utilize what has been taught more extensively

Teacher will go through the meaning of the words in the box with students. Teacher will put a star (*) on the wb beside the words that don't fit the rule. Teacher will put students into pairs and ask them to put the words into a chart under the verb they collocate with. Teacher will mingle to help any students. Check answers with class. Have students come up to the board to write answers.

Writing Practice (3-5 minutes) • For students to expand on what they have learned

Ask students to choose six different nouns from the box and write six different sentences using the collocations 'make' and 'do'.
