Listening
Intermediate level

Description

Students will develop their listening skills in the context of transport and travel. Students then will be able to produce during the speaking stage.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about travelling from London to Avignon in the context of transport and travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion, exchanging ideas and presentation in the context of transport and travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T plays a video about what transportation might be like in the future. Before watching the video, T asks ss to think about how they get to the class and how transportation might be like in the future. T then elicits their answers.

Pre-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T pre-teaches vocab through visuals and ECDW. T gives instructions and tells ss to get up. Then asks ss to stick the words on the board when they see the relevant picture. T elicits and drills the words while they are in front of the board, and lets ss write the word class and stress on the board since ss like interaction and mingling.

While-Listening /listening for gist (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

T shows the HO asks ss to listen and find the order of events before playing the track. T monitors during the listening without being obtrusive, then shows the answer key after peer-correction. T aims at developing listening for gist skills.

While-Listening/ listening for specific information (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening tasks

T regroups the ss then shows the HO and asks ss to listen again and fill in the gaps. T monitors without being obtrusive and let ss peer-check afterwards. s plays the track again if necessary before getting WC FB

While-Listening/ listening for comprehension (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T gives instructions and asks ss to listen again and mark the sentences True or False before distributing the 3rd HO. T then distributes the HO. SS work individually while listening and completing the exercise. T monitors without being obtrusive and allows time for peer-check. Ss listen to the track again if necessary . T gets WC FB before moving on to the next stage.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T divides the class into two groups. T gives instructions to work on designing the "vehicle of the future". Ss draw their vehicle, and talk about its properties by following the guidelines on the PPT. (Please see the attachment for further details. Even though there are certain criteria, this will be a relatively freer activity.) SS then present their designs. If time allows T will give individual and/or delayed FB.
