Description

In this lesson Ss will learn about past simple, questions and negatives as well as Wh questions.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Tommy's Grandfather's Life experience
  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Life in 20th century in the context of Grandfather Bill's life experiences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of Past Simple tense in the context of 20th century events and life styles
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation using the past simple tense

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The lesson will start by asking Ss what they think is the most important event of the 20th Century. After eliciting some answers, Ss will be a divided in groups of 2 or 3 and given a sheet of questions related to the important events of the 20th century. After about 4 minutes, T plays the tape script CD2-37 to get the correct answers. Answers will be tallied up and the winning group will be awarded. Students will be asked if they learned any new information. Meaning of "ago" will be elicited from Ss using some of the examples given in the quiz. Some of the pre-vocab to be covered are: ago, talking movie, subtitles, hit (music), Model-T car.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss will be given a handout about the conversation between Bill and his grandfather. They will listen to CD2-38. Ss will mark the subjects discussed in the audio such as: Programmes on TV, Sport, pocket money, housework, comics, holidays. Next Ss will be given fill in the gap exercise about the questions Bill asks his grandfather. Ss will fill the exercises alone and check their answers with their partner. Tape Script CD2-39 will be played again to verify the answers.

Past Simple question formation (5-6 minutes) • To practice question formation with the Past Simple tense.

Ss will be given Ex2 in Handout. This exercise will encourage Ss to practice questions such as: Where, When, Who, How, Why, What, How much, How many, Which one, What time. Ss will be given a set verbs and answers. They will be required to order and use the questions and verbs for the correct answers. After about 3 minutes, Ss will check their answers with their partners. They will practice asking the questions and answering them in PW. Tape script CD2-40 will be played to get the correct answers. AK will be given to Ss for F/B..

Speaking practice using Past Simple tense (5-8 minutes) • To further solidify the word order in questions in Past Simple and practice using Ss own experiences.

EX3 in HO's will be given Ss which lists 8 sentences with scrambled word order. They will be asked to form the correct sentence and ask that question to their partners. Partners are required to give correct answers using their own life experience. Each S will take turns asking the same questions to their partners so that each of them will have an opportunity to create the question and also answer it. At the end of the exercise, T will give Ss the correct questions to check against their own.

Post-Reading/Listening (13-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for the students to practice speaking, asking and answering questions about past events in the context of Bill's Life

Using Ex4 in the HO. Ss will be grouped in pairs and whey will each have a set of questions they can ask their partners. The questions and and answers will be in Past Simple tense. Each S will have a different information about Bill's life. They will practice their Speaking Skills using the information provided in the HO. There will be 13 questions and answers pairs. This will allow students to learn and practice formation of Past Simple questions in a conversational style to achieve the Productive skill of Speaking. At the end of exercise the answer key will be given to Ss to verify their questions / answers
