Description

In this lesson Ss will learn about the Past Simple tense. As a secondary aim Ss will be practicing their Listening and Pronunciation Skills. The context of the lesson will be life of Oprah. Past Simple tense verbs will be used to analyze her past accomplishments.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of past simple tense in the context of life and accomplishments of TV personality Oprah. By the end of the lesson Ss should be able to use Past Simple tense properly for regular verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Oprah's Life achievements
  • To provide the Speaking Skills required for the use of Past Simple tense. By the end of the session Ss should be able to use Past Tense of regular verbs such as asking questions and answering in Past Simple.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be asked what they remember about the life of Oprah. After they are done they will work in pairs and share their findinds with WC

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss will be asked to listen to (or read ) a text (pg 46, text B) about Oprah's past life. Picture of a coal mine and others will be shown to clarify the meaning of some vocabulary. Then Ss will be given an exercise to answer CCQ's in handout ex.1.Questions included will be about the time frame of the events that took place in Oprah's life. They will also be asked to identify the infinitive form of the verb used in Past Simple tense. This will expose students to the Past Simple form of the regular verbs. They will be able to deduce how Past Simple tense is derived from the infinitive form (eg: add -ed, -ied) for majority of regular verbs. The answers to the questions will be shown graphically on a time line on the board.

Discovering the Past Simple Tense exercise (8-10 minutes) • Analyzing and discovering the form of the Past Simple tense.

T projects the following sentences on the WB. 1.Oprah lived with her grandmother (positive) 2. “..we didn’t have much money” (negative) 3. Oprah did study drama (stress) 4. So what did Oprah do ? (wh-question) 5. Did Oprah live with her grandmother? (yes/no question) Ss will be given cut ups with the words: "Verb, did, didn't -ed, subject, not, wh-question". Ss will be asked to put these in the proper order according to the sentences shown. After individual work, Ss will check their answers with partners. After class is finished, T will show answers on the WB with projection.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

ex 2 (pg 47, C) will be given with some missing information. The audio for the text will be played and Ss will be asked to fill in the missing information. At the end of audio Ss will check their answers in PW. T and WC will verify and T will share AK's with Ss.

Regular Verb examples (5-7 minutes) • Practice forming the Past Simple from the infinitive of the verb

Students will be given a list of common Verbs will be asked to write the Past Simple form. Ss should be able to form the past simple based on what they learned about the rules of formation. However small exceptions like Stop --> Stopped which has doubled p letter will be explained. Also study becomes studied which clarify the effect of "y" at the end of the verb. Also if the verb ends with "e" simply adding "d" will make the Past Simple eg: Move ---> Moved.

Form clarification (7-9 minutes) • Past Simple tense Question formation

Ss will be given Ex 3. It consists of Questions sentences with missing information (words) but the answers are already given. Ss will be required to form the Wh-question for these answers. After completion Ss will check their answers with their partner. In the end they will share their answers with Class and T will provide AK's

Pronunciation exercises (8-9 minutes) • To teach students various pronunciation differences of past simple verbs

Students will listen (CD2, Track 26) and repeat pronunciation of the verbs. /t/ /d/ /ıd/ Then Ss will listen to (CD2, Track 27) and asked to write the verbs in the proper pronunciation column. as follows: /t/ /d/ /ıd/ worked lived started After this exercise students will be show a list of verbs with these pronunciations and drilled together. The examples that will be drilled are : He worked in an office We lived in a small house We wanted a pizza I watched a good program on TV We moved out of Istanbul He started a new job She talked about her brother I earned a lot of money I decided to get married We stopped at a hotel Atatürk died in 1938 Picasso created a painting etc...
