Description

In this lesson ss read a text about a tour in New York called the Circle Line Tour. They answer some detailed questions and then work n vocabulary related to town and city.

Procedure

Warmer (2-4 minutes) • preteach some words

I ask ss to focus on the photo of Circle Line and elicit the word "ferry". I teach the words "sights" and "sightseeing", and "cruise"

Setting the task (3-5 minutes) • clarification of the questions

I ask ss to read the questions. I teach "how long" = how much time. I explain the use of how + adjective to make questions, e.g., How long...? How far...? How old...? I then teach the word landmark.

Detailed reading (7-9 minutes) • Gist reading

I set a time limit for students to read the text (five minutes) and find the answers. Later I have them compare with a partner and then check answers with them. Answers: 1 around the entire island of Manhattan or around the bottom of the island 2 two or three hours 3 the Statue of Liberty 4 525 5 about 10 mph 6 12:30 p.m.; 9:30 a.m. 7 every hour 8 online, by phone, or the ticket office 9 yes 10 near the boat on 42nd Street and 12th Avenue

Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • Guess the meaning of new words

I ask ss to work in pairs and guess the meaning of the highlighted words from the context, and then match them to their meanings. I check answers with them. Answers: 1 in advance 2 are available 3 daily 4 approximately 5 room 6 passengers

Speaking (3-5 minutes) • Personalization of the topic

I ask them a question: "Would you like to go on the Circle Line Tour? Why (not)?"

Vocabulary (6-8 minutes) • learning some words about town and city

I ask ss to go to page 152 and do the exercises in pairs. I check the answers. Answers: 1 a police station, 2 a bus station, 3 a river, 4 a shopping mall, 5 a department store, 6 a bridge, 7 a hospital, 8 a bank, 9 an art gallery, 10 a church, 11 a museum, 12 a movie theater, 13 a sports center, 14 a palace, 15 a road, 16 a train station, 17 a supermarket, 18 a theater, 19 a street, 20 a school, 21 a travel agency, 22 a pharmacy, 23 a market, 24 a town hall, 25 a park, 26 a mosque, 27 a post office, 28 a square

I ask them to focus on the questionnaire. I put them in pairs and ask them to interview each other. I elicit the answers, each ss talking about their partner's responses.

Warmer (1-3 minutes) • To engage their interest

I ask them when people send postcards. I ask them to look at the postcards and ask them where they are from. (they're both from Prague) I don't give them the answer at this stage.

Reading the post card (3-5 minutes) • comprehension

I ask them to read the postcards and guess which city it is. (Prague) I then ask them to match the post card with the correct postcard. (postcard 1) I make sure they know that they should ignore the blanks.

Filling in the blanks (3-5 minutes) • Revision of tenses

I ask them to read the postcard to fill in the blanks. Ss do it in pairs. I check the answers with them. Answers: We're hvaing arrived we're staying went visited we're sitting is are go have

Writing (4-6 minutes) • The importance of checking writing

I go through the instructions with ss. (page 73 part c). I stress the importance of checking writing after they have done it. I ask ss to write a postcard for the following session. I encourage them to use a real post card.
