Description

In this lesson, SS will practise family vocabulary and will be introduced tricky words like "parents, nephew, niece, grandfather...". T will elicit the vocabulary by showing pictures of her own family, drills, asks CCQs. For further understanding SS will complete sentences like: "My mother's father is my ...." (mingling) . SS will complete a listening chart in order to identify the introduced vocab. Then SS will draw a chart of their own, write the names of people in their family and in pairs - ask and answer questions like: "Who is.....?" This last activity will be followed up by a song called "Doing The Family Thing" SS will listen to this song and fill in the blanks with missing lyrics they will hear, compare their answers with each other, give feedback to T and check their answers by listening for the second time.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of family lexis in the context of family tree templates, charts and a related listening task

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about family in the context of Joseph's family exercise selected from New Headway, SB

Procedure

Stage 1 - Warmer / Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • to elicit lexis from SS by showing visuals of my own family

T arrange the seating as a circle before welcoming SS to the class. They all sit together in the circle and pass the pictures to each other by guessing who they are (mother, father, brother...) SS will just be hearing the pronunced forms of words at this stage.

Stage 2 - Teaching Vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • to introduce family lexis with also the tricky words they aren't expected to know before.

T reflects her ppt on the board, - shows The Simpsons' family tree, - SS match post-its ,which have family vocab on, with the pictures, - T drills the family lexis and asks CCQs

Stage 3 - Identifying (2-3 minutes) • to reinforce the family lexis

T asks "Can you show me the parents / children / father and mother / husband and wife...?" SS reply - whole class feedback

Stage 4 - Practice (5-6 minutes) • for further practise of family lexis within a given exercise

T sets the task - SS complete the task individually - and mingle - asking and checking their answers

Stage 5 - Listening (5-7 minutes) • to check comprehension of family lexis upon completion of a listening task

T sets the task by showing HOs to SS - giving instructions on what to do T asks ICQs to check understanding T hands out the HOs SS listen and fill in the blanks with the names of people they hear SS peer check SS give whole class feedback

Stage 6 - Speaking (7-8 minutes) • to talk about their own family by using newly introduced lexis

T sets the task - pairs weak and strong ones for working together - T gives instructions - asks ICQs (if not, demonstrates with a strong student) - SS will talk about their own families by using "I've got..." as target language.

Stage 7 - follow-up (5-7 minutes) • to guide the SS through using family lexis in the context of a real life activity

T sets the task - gives instructions - SS will work on their own first - SS write the names of the people in their family - SS then will work in pairs (different pairs) - ask and answer question of "Who is ....?" - then take turns

Back-up Activity (10-11 minutes) • to get a feedback on how well they know the new lexis by using a song they might like

SS will listen a song fill in the blanks with missing lyrics compare their answers with a partner give a whole class feedback and check their answers by listening for the second time
