The Present Continuous Tense

Description

In this lesson the students will practice the present continuous questions and short answers in the context of two listening tasks on people at work . First , the students will answer the questions after listening to a phone call between Frank and Liz . Then , they complete a table on the board that teaches them the form of the present continuous questions . After that , they write positive and negative short answers for the questions given .Finally , they listen to a phone call between Frank and his wife to make questions in the present continuous.

Main Aims

  • To practice the present continuous questions and short answers in the context of two listening tasks on people at work .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice listening for gist, specific information and detail through the context of a phone call at work.

Procedure

Lead in ( Describing different actions in a picture) (5 minutes) • To introduce , generate interest and get the students ready for making the questions in the context of a day at work.

I will start the lesson by sitting the students into groups of three or four. Then, I will ask them to work with a partner to describe what the people are doing in the pictures and tell me where they are .They talk as much as they can .

Pre – teach the vocabulary. (7 minutes) • To familiarize the students with the key words suggested on the book.

By using pictures , CQs and the board I'm going to introduce the new vocab items . They are darling , kids ,move and sign .

Listening Task (A) (3 minutes) • To enable the students to listen for gist.

To get the students' interest and attention I will ask them to listen and tell me how many people are talking on the phone.

Listening Task (B) (10 minutes) • To enable the students to listen for details.

The students will listen to a phone call between Frank and Liz to be able to answer the questions. Then , they check their answers in groups.

Grammar Box Task (4 minutes) • To enable the students to know the form of the questions in the present continuous tense.

I will stick some words on the board and draw a table . Then I will ask the students to complete the table so that they will be familiarized with the correct form of the question. Then , using a hand out they write positive and negative short answers for the given questions.

Listening Task (A) (9 minutes) • To enable the students to make questions in the present continuous.

The students are going to read the conversation between Frank and his wife . Then , they make questions in the present continuous tense . Finally , They listen to the phone call and check their answers.

Speaking Activity (7 minutes) • To produce the target language by comparing two pictures.

I will stick two pictures on the board . The students are going to make sentences comparing what the people are doing in them saying " In A Frank is .......... but in B he's ................ ".
