Upper-Intermediate level


In this lesson ss will practice the productive skill-listening in the context of worldwide tour. They will be introduced to a tourism guidance by the teacher to her own home country and pre-taught some useful expressions of recommendations and advice. Ss will by the end of the lesson reuse the same target language to guide their peers to a visit to their respective country.


Main Aims

  • • By the end of the lesson ss will have been introduced to and have practiced the functional language of giving advice and recommendations in the context of tourism around the world.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To practise listening specific information • To practise speaking for giving advice and recommendation in the context of tourism and designing a tour


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Get ss' attention on the PPP of maps of several countries and ask whether they like travelling around the world. One of the maps is teacher's respective country. Ask ss to guess which country it is and whether they would like to visit it someday.

Exposure (8-11 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Try to elicit from ss questions on what they like to visit in Algeria. Teacher gives a clear demo to ss through using the target language (useful language) in recommending and giving advice about places they should visit and which they should not. ss are exposed to interaction meaningful conversation about sites and places they like to visit or explore about teacher's home country. Teacher checks concept understanding, Drills and leave the written form to the following stage. ss will memorise the expressions pronunciation first.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

ss divided into groups and given pre-task questions and then listen to audio recording; ss then will answer questions or fill in the blanks with specific details. ICQ, what are you goingto do? read questions first or listen first? when recording is done, ss check answers against their peers' and with WC. a second recording is played and ss check their answers for the second time. By the end FB is given on a worksheet.

Productive Task(s)\ semi controlled (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

ss work in pairs and choose a strip from the six strips they are given. They choose either to ask the question or responding to the question by using the useful expressions they have learnt are asked to reuse the TL and integrate it to their existing knowledge in order to guide their peers for a tour to a different country or a city. ss change their peers and start over. ss will learn how to use the language of advice and recommendation in describing or visiting different places and sites. ICQ; are you going to work alone? Which country you're taking your friend to?

Feedback and Error Correction (4-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

delayed feedback will be provided by the end of the activity. write ss correct and incorrect mistakes and let them spot the mistake or decide on the correct sentence with their peers or individually.
