Description

In this lesson, Students will practice speaking and listening in the context of giving tips on things to do and things to avoid when visiting their cities/countries

Materials

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss some pictures on a Jamboard presentation of different cultural customs such as greetings, clothes, and meetings, and asks Ss to brainstorm what they can see. T writes ideas on the presentation

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T tells Ss they will be listening to three people talking about customs in their countries. T shows Ss a Google Forms link with three questions they need to answer while listening. They will listen once and answer the first question with the whole group and then they will listen again and work individually to answer the other two questions left. After finishing listening, Ss will share and compare answers with the whole group. T nominates Ss to check answers Questions and Answer Key: 1. What are they talking about? Customs in their countries 2. Where are they from? Ramon -- Spain Lee Kuan -- Singapore Rosa -- Peru 3. What do they mention about their countries? Ramon -- Going out late in Spain is very normal Lee Kuan -- Dress smartly and wearing makeup is important Rosa -- No one arrives on time

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T shares a Jamboard presentation with 2 clouds, inside of each there are 2 titles (What to do) and (What not to do), they make reference to things to do in a new country and things to avoid. Meaning: Ss will categorize the expressions according to what they refer to in each cloud. They will work individually first and then share their answers with the whole group What to do sentences: Always remember to ... It is important to ... It is usual to ... What not to do sentences: You should never ... No one ... It is not acceptable to ... Form: Ss will complete three sentences with the correct word and identify if the missing word is an adjective, an adverb, or a modal verb. They will work individually and then check with the whole group It is __usual____ to arrive late in Peru (adjective) You ___should___ never use informal clothes in Singapore (modal verb) __Always____ remember to go out late in Spain (adverb) It is not __acceptable__ to wear dirty clothes (adjective) T checks pronunciation by modeling the words and asks Ss to drill them

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T tells Ss they will be working in pairs. The idea of this stage is for them to use the target language to give each other tips when visiting their cities or countries in case they are in a different country. Allow 1-2 mins preparation time. Then put Ss to work in pairs in BORs. Ss will give 3 tips about what to do and 3 about what not to do in their cities, when speakers are done, encourage the listener to ask questions to their partner. T will monitor the activity to identify possible mistakes

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T shows Ss errors they made during the speaking task and nominates some learners to identify the mistake and correct it. T writes the correction for them to have a visual comparison between the correct and incorrect use of the target language
