Materials

Abc American English File 2 Student Book second edition
Abc board

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present and past simple passive in the context of things they do/are done on the weekends/lazy days.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Things they do/are done on the weekends/lazy days.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, I will start to ask them about their previous weekend and what they did. It seems it's just a normal meeting and questions at the first of the class but actually, I am going to relate the conversation to our new grammar, present and past simple passive.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Here, in this stage, I am going to use some of their own sentences ( Active voice ) and then turn them into passive voice. Here I'm going to ask them some questions like on page 76 ( like what do they think of this new structure, do the sentences have the same meaning, and in which sentence the focus is more on the subj and why do they think that )

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In this stage, I will teach them the meaning, form, and pronunciation of this new grammar, present and past simple passive. At first, I'm going to teach them the meaning of this grammar and its structure ( the form of present and past simple past, the negative form, and the simple question form of this grammar. We can use timeline here ). Then I will teach them some important intonation and ask some of them to repeat some of the examples with the right intonation. In the end, I will give them some examples.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this stage, I will ask them to do some of the exercises ( in pairs or individually) and then check them with the whole class.

Semi - Controlled Practice (1-2 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

If I have more time, I will tell them to make some sentences in an Active voice and then change it into a Passive voice; we will check them in class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

And finally, I will ask them "If you had a robot, what kind of tasks do you think should be done by them? What do you want them to do ?" and then we will start our free practice and talk about it with the whole class. ( the target language is maybe used or not )
