Description

In this lesson, students learn and practice the past continuous tense.The teacher enters the class talking about her last night. She uses some past continuous sentences. Then the lesson starts with a short video about TL. After clarifying and highlighting, the teacher gives some tasks to the students as controlled practice and free practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of past continuous in the context of movie (Last night's activities).
  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for narrative structer

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation and storytelling in the context of (Last night's activities).

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

​The teacher enters the class talking about her last night. She uses some past continuous sentences, Then students watch a short video to get familiar with the past continuous. After highlighting and clarification, the teacher gives some tasks to the students as controlled practice and free practice.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher asks the students about: What were you doing at 8 pm last night? Did something special happen to you? Then the teacher will help the students to elicit a sentence using the past continuous.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher highlights the past continuous structure. She writes many sentences that the students make in the correct form. The teacher will draw the student's attention to grammatical structure.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher will clarify the form, function, meaning and pronunciation with the help of the students. The structure and the meaning are elicited and the pronunciation and intonation are practiced with drilling. Also, the teacher draws a time line on the board to help students to understand the concept, then she compares the past simple with the past continuous.

Controlled Practice (1-2 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students complete the blanks in the statements individually, and then they will check their answers in pairs. After that, the answer will be checked by the whole class. Students fill in the blanks with a suitable option. They should be able to recognize the difference between the past simple and past continuous.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher divides the students into 3 groups and gives them a speaking exercise . She asks each group :What kind of music were you listening to 5 years ago? She asks them to speak the imagined situation sentences in the past continuous tense.The students discuss in groups and the teacher monitors them.
