Description

In this lesson, children learn about the name of each member of their family with the help of cards. The lesson begins with the following question to the students about who their family is. This is followed with the help of photographs of family members. Finally, they will write the name of their relative, which member of the family they are, and with a drawing of each one.

  • That students know how to differentiate the words in English from the names of family members.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

Ask students: who lives in your house? How many people live in your house? How are they called? For example: I live with my dad Abel, my mom Paulina, my two brothers: Christian and Antonio and my sister Paola, we are 6 people. Ask for the random participation of students.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situacion

In English, the names of family members are very different from the words in Spanish. For example: My mom's name is Claudia.

Highlighting (5-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Write on the board the sentence: My mom's name is ____. Let the students write their mother's name.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Explain to students the pronunciation of the names of family members, write on the board: mother, father, daughter, son, grandson, grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt, cousin, brother, sister with images.

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask students to copy the written words of the names of family members in their notebooks.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will draw a picture in their notebook representing each member of the family.

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students make a drawing in their notebook about the members that make up their family with the name of each of them and what member of the family it is.
