Description

In this lesson, the students will practice listening for gist and listening for details skills. At the beginning of the lesson, the students will learn some new words in the context of Last Weekend. During the lesson they are going to practice listening for gist and details skills. At the end of the lesson the students will also practice speaking skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Two days in Liverpool in the context of Last weekend

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide semi-controlled speaking practice in the context of ‘advise me, please, what I can do next weekend

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will tell about his/her last weekend. Then he/she will ask the students to work in pairs and tell each other what did they do lat weekend. The teacher will set a limited time of 3 minuutes.

Pre-Listening (7-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening the text and make it accessible

The teacher will give the student an exercise sheet with the matching activity to check if they are familiar with new vocabulary. After they finish this exercise they will check their answers in pairs. Then the teacher will check if they really know words by giving examples and write all new words on the WB and drill them together with students. In case the learners do not know some words, the teacher is going to explaine their meanings by giving examples.Then he/she will ask the class if someone visited Liverpool. Then the teacher will give some general information about this city and show some pictures.

While-Listening #1 (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with practicing their gist listening skills

The teacher will give the students the exercise sheet with questions. He/she will instruct them what to do (1st - read all questions; 2nd - listen to the dialogue and find answers; everybody needs to work alone/individually; when you finish you may check your answers with your partner). Then the teacher ask some ICQs ( 'What are you going to do first?', 'Are you going to work individually or in pairs?' etc). When the learners are going to work on the task the teacher will monitor which questions are difficult for them. Then the teacher will check answers the students had problems with.

While-Listening #2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with listening task for details

The teacher will give the students an exercise sheet with sentences where they need to fill the gaps by choosing the correct answer. He/she will instruct them what to do (1st - read all sentences; 2nd - listen to the dialogue and find the correct answers; everybody needs to work alone/individually; when you finish you may check your answers with your partner). Then the teacher ask some ICQs like 'What are you going to do first?', 'Are you going to work individually or in pairs?' etc. The teacher will play the dialogue twice if the learners need it. After they finish, the teacher will check the answers they have problems with by discussing them with the whole class.

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with semi-controlled speaking activity

The teacher will tell the students that they are going to discuss in pairs what the teacher can do in Istanbul next weekend, but before he/she will write and give some clarifications and examples of some words useful to build sentences for speaking activity (should/could/can/might/must). Then the teacher will give instructions (1) discuss in pairs what can they advise me to do in İstanbul on next weekend writing down some notes on the sheet (the teacher will show the activity sheet) ; 2) you have 2-3 minutes to discuss it; 3) you need to use new vocabulary) and ask ICQs (What are you going to discuss? Are you going to use new vocabulary? Are you going to take some notes?). After that, he/she will divide the class into pairs, changing their partners; give each pair the activity sheet with the plan for next weekend. Then the teacher will put 2 groups together to share their ideas. During the speaking activity the teacher will monitor the class and write down some common mistake for error correction part at the end of the lesson. At the end of this stage the teacher will ask the learners to help him/her to plan next weekend in Istanbul.

Feedback (4-6 minutes) • To get a feedback and correct sommon mistakes

The teacher will ask students same question to get a feedback from them like 'Which days are weekend days?', What can we do for our weekend?', 'What can we visit?, 'What can we do on weekends? etc. Then the teacher will write some mistakes on the WB and will ask different questions to make the students to correct them.
