Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson Ss will have developed their reading for gist and detailed information skills in the context of “A legacy of the Samurai.".”

Subsidiary Aims

  • Display a variety of reading strategies that students may use in class.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students make groups of 3 and discuss about Samurais. SS answer the following questions in their groups. - Who were the samurai? - Where were they from? - When did they live? - What did they do?

Pre-Teaching (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

SS are given 6 sentences: 1. I don't understand the attraction of war films. 2. I think I'm winning against my opponent. 3. That boxer is frightening. He's so intense and aggressive. 4. The army was exausted after the attack. 5. We fought without any weapons. 6. The police say they're looking for a single, unaccompanied gunman. SS will be asked to replace word in bold with: - battle-weary - unarmed - overcoming - appeal - lone - fierce

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS are asked to read the text for the firs time and then will go to breakout rooms again in order to check their answers in exercise 1. Then, the whole class discuss and answer the questions.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss are asked to read the text for the second time and classify 5 sentences in true and false.1 1. The early samurai were similar to European Knights. 2. The samurai eventually died out following their defeat in battle. 3. Samurai soldiers had a wide range of cultural interests. 4. The military skills of the samurai have been lost. 5. The legacy of the samurai has spread outside Japan.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

SS will go to breakout rooms and they will be asked to think about a time in the past in which they would like to go back. They have to think about these points: - When and where - Why that time appeals to you - Your role or position in that society - Opportunities - Possible dangers
