Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will be able to talk about Thailand’s customs by listening and how to use ‘it’ to introduce generalizations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking about their cultures

Procedure

Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus ss' attention on the PowerPoint pictures and try to elicit as much information from them as possible. For example: Which country is it? What do you know about their social customs? Do you know anything about the food in Thailand?

Pre-listening discussion and practice (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible to understand

As long as I have already shown the pictures of Thailand by PowerPoint and it has been illustrated and the words are almost easy and understandable, so I will ask them to talk about the following questions for 2 minutes. 1) What do you know about Thailand? 2) Do you know anything about the food or the social customs? After that they i will ask them to read the text which is about the tips for visitors to Thailand and guess the answers.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging and specific information in listening task

I will ask them to listen to the CD and look at their answers whether they are correct. They will probably miss some of them and i will ask them to check their answers in pairs. I will play for the second time if it is necessary. Students will listen again and check their answers in pairs. Provide visual feedback on the WB so that ss can check in groups. CCQs Do people in Thailand take their shoes off? Yes. Is it usual to shake hands? No. Is it acceptable for couples to kiss in public? No. Do Thai people tend to serve food in large bowls? Yes. Do Thai couples tend to hold hands? No. Do men bow to women? No.

Listening for detail (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

I will check the answers on the WB and I will ask them to circle the correct answers and then discuss the following question ‘what thing are the same and different for your culture?’ In this case they will use the pre-fabricated phrases such as It is important to.... It is not usual to.... It is not acceptable for couples to .... Following that, they will be asked to do practice 1 page 75. And check their answers in pairs.

Feedback and Error Correction on the whit board (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They will be asked to do Ex.2 pg.75 which is speaking and students will tick the correct answer about their country then they will compare their answers and speak for almost 5 min then i will walk around the class to find some errors which they will make and write up a mixture of correct and incorrect forms and allow ss time to decide in their groups.
