Persuasive writing
Grade 5 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about persuasive writing and how to format a simple persuasive essay for a particular topic. The lesson begins with the introduction of the concept of persuasiveness and encourages students to think critically to form ideas and arguments for their selected positions. The lesson then proceeds to introduce the students to simple writing techniques, format and essential vocabulary to produce an effective piece of persuasive essay. Finally, the students are given a task to write a paragraph of an essay and give feedback to their peers.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with the set of skills and knowledge to be able to effectively produce a persuasive essay.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To get students to think critically and speak about a particular position in a persuasive manner.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Brief introduction in which students talk about their weekends, then students will be asked if they are familiar with the concept of persuasiveness, what it might mean, and how it might differ from other forms of communication styles and writings.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Student will be introduced to the format of persuasive writing. The purpose of the format will be explained in order for them to form effective essays.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students will be made familiar with essential vocabulary such as; ''To begin with, firstly, secondly, in addition, moreover, furthermore, however, in my opinion, on the whole, finally, in conclusion''.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students will be asked to give examples of good and bad arguments, the importance of research and firm knowledge of the topic of their essay will be highlighted in this stage.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will be given a task to write a paragraph about the below topic. Each student writes a paragraph in a persuasive style. The task: Their school considering an expansion of its recreation area and they can,t decide whether they should build a new sports area or a new cafeteria. Students will be asked to pick one and write a paragraph to the school administration in order to pursue them of their choice.

Second Stage of the Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will swap their papers and will read other each other's paragraphs.

Peer feedback and Conclusion (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be asked to read out each others paragraph, and asked to find one right thing their peers did in their writing, and one thing they could change. I will then wrap up the class and conclude.
