Description

In this lesson, sts will practice receptive skills – reading in the context of Olympic Games and sport. First, the context will be set by showing images of some Turkish olympic sportswomen. The meaning of essential vocabulary will be pretaught before the reading. This will be followed by reading for gist andf activity practicing this skill. Then sts will read for detail and fill the sentences with words from the article. After that, sts will have an opportunity to practice TL in a speaking task.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using an article about paraglading in the context of sport and Olympic games.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of sport

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows images of Turkish Olympic sportswomen in order to set the context of the lesson. Teacher asks : Do you know who these women are? What do they have in common? Teacher shows image of five olympic rings in order to elicit from sts word Olympics sts work in pairs matching sports to verbs. answers are presented on the WB

Pre-Reading (8-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher pre-teaches some of the vocabulary: Paragliding by showing image Hang gliding by showing image Skydiving by showing image Competition – teacher says that The Olympics are a competition what other kinds of competition do you know: sport, music competitions (like bu ses turkiye), dance, competitions on tv (like survivor) Teacher drills the sentences: She fell in love with paragliding. She entered her first competition. Teacher asks sts to discuss in groups if they are watching the Olympics, and what sport is their favourite to watch.

While-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Reading for gist: students read the article about Louise Crandal,who is an international championship in paragliding. Pragliders in order to maket he sport more popular are trying to get it accepted as an Olympic sport. Sts read the text quickly and match the paragraphs with the titles. sts peer check their answers then WC check

While-Reading (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Reading for detail: sts are given a handout with 6 topics and are asked to find one that is not mentioned in the article. Sts work in pairs Sts are asked to complete the sentences with words from the article. Sts work individually, scan the text,then peercheck in pairs. Sts are given an AK.

Post-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Sts are asked to work in groups and choose one sportsman or woman that they think are the most popular and say why. Sts choose a spokesman for each group, who presents the group’s choice. Then sts has to agree on only one person, who will be named a sportsman of the year.
