Description

This is a functional language lesson on the topic of using the phone.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of functional language surrouding phone calls.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of of grammar and words and phrases to use on the phone for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will begin by introducing the topic of the lesson to the students through a series of questions in regards to speaking on the phone.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask the students to read a text transcription of a phone call, and ask them to explain what the gist the phone call is. Tom: Hello?
 Sam: Hello, can I speak to Alex?
 Tom: Hold on, give me one moment. 
 Alex: Hello, this is Alex.
 Sam: Hey! It’s Sam. I was wondering… Would you like to get lunch today?
 Alex: Sure! I have a doctor’s appointment at 10am. Can I call you back afterwards?
 Sam: Yes, of course, I’ll be running errands. You can reach me on my cellphone when you’re done. 
Alex: Perfect. I’ll call you later. 
Sam: Sounds great, see you later!
 Alex: Bye! We will conduct open class feedback on their responses.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask the students if they can guess when they might you say the following in a conversation: Can I speak to ______? Give me one moment. This is ______. Can I call you back? You can reach me at/on ______. I’ll call you later. Will will discuss the use and appropriacy together as a class.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will provide a slide for each of following target phrases: Can I speak to ______? Give me one moment. This is ______. Can I call you back? You can reach me at/on ______. I’ll call you later. I will cover meaning, form, and pronunciation. CCQ's will be included to elicit the meaning from the students. Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will then re-read the conversation after having the target language explained to them so that they can answer a few questions I have put together in a google form. They are to complete this activity in BORs. Tom: Hello?
 Sam: Hello, can I speak to Alex?
 Tom: Hold on, give me one moment. 
 Alex: Hello, this is Alex.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will then prompt the students to create a fake phone call of their own. This activity will be performed in pairs. We will regroup as a class so they can perform their phone calls.
