Outlining paragraphs
Intermediate - Essentials level

Description

In this lesson, students learn how to outline a simple paragraph (a simple argument). The lesson starts with a warm-up and this is followed by an example to assess the students' general knowledge. Then the students will work on some examples (first in pairs and then individually) to understand the lesson completely.

Materials

Abc Gap-fill handout
Abc Powepoint File

Main Aims

  • To teach the process of outlining a simple paragraph (a simple argument).

Subsidiary Aims

  • To teach the students how to write key words and summarize an idea.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Some questions are asked to engage the students and trigger their background knowledge.

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

An example will be provided on the board to test the students' background knowledge and the students should answer the questions.

Teach (6-11 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The students should work on the first example from the handout and the teachers will give feedback to see which areas are difficult for them.

Test #2 (6-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

The second example will be provided and the students will work on that in pairs.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The third example will be provided but this time the students should work on it individually. The feedback will be provided and the students correct each other. And after that, they will write a simple paragraph based on the outlining technique.
