Teaching Practice 6
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, I will test the students for to see what they know and what they need to know. After the test, I will ask about the meaning of the time words ‘for’ and ‘since’. If they know, I will continue with the activities, but if they need more clarification I will clarify the function of ‘for’ and ‘since’. After that, there will be a controlled activity. The Ss will read and put the relevant one in the gaps. After that there will be another controlled activity to make Ss use the present perfect with the time words and to make Ss understand the use of the time words ‘for’ and ‘since’ more clearly. Then, there will be a freer activity to make use their productive skills of writing and speaking. If we have time, there will be a freer activity again, to make them speak about their own experiences.

Main Aims

  • • To introduce & give practice in the use and form of time words ‘since’ and ‘for’, using the present perfect tense.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking to practice the time words ‘for’ and ‘since’.
  • Writing to practice the form of the time words ‘for’ and ‘since’.

Procedure

Test (3-4 minutes) • To test the Ss’ knowledge of the difference between ‘for’ and ‘since’

I will ask students to read two sentences and to discuss the differences in meaning between them in pairs. I will ask some ICQs: Are you going to write the sentences? No. Are you going to discuss with me? No. Then I will show them the sentences on the w/b. After they finish I will elicit some answers from the students.

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the difference between t he time words ‘since’ and ‘for’

I will draw a timeline and show what ‘since’ and ‘for’ refer to in means of time. I will ask some CCQs: Is this the duration?, Is this the start point? Does it still exist?/ Does it exist now? After that there will be a drilling for pronunciation.

Controlled Written Practice (5-6 minutes) • To make Ss practice the use of ‘since’ and ‘for’

I will tell Ss to write ‘since’ or ‘for’ or ‘in’ in front of the time expressions on the HOs, and I will ask them to do it in pairs. When they finish, there will be a FB to see if they understand the meaning and use of the time words. I will ask questions ‘How do you know?’ or ‘Why is it since/for?’ to make sure that they understand the functions of the time words.

Controlled Written Practice (7-8 minutes) • To make Ss practice the time words in and the present perfect tense.

I will ask Ss to fill the gaps using the present perfect tense and ‘for’ / ‘since’, in pairs. I will ask them some ICQ questions; ‘Are you going to use past tense? No.’, ‘Are you going to do it in pairs? Yes’. I will distribute the HOs. When they finish there will be a short FB and CCQs such as; When did I start to live in this town? Ten years ago. Do I still live in this town? Yes.

Freer practice (9-10 minutes) • To make students practice the time words productively

I will ask Ss to fill the info-gap about a woman on the worksheet in pairs, and then write the same information about their own lives. I will distribute the HOS and when they finish I will re-group them, and ask them to speak about their sentences.

Freer Speaking (10-13 minutes) • To make students practice the time words productively

I will ask Ss to think of 3 (or 5) things that they started doing in the past, and continue to do, and write them down as sentences, after they finish their sentences I will ask them to walk around and talk with everyone and find the most interesting answer.
