Description

In his lesson, students will learn how to express their past habits using "used to". By guided discovery method, the topic will be introduced and then they will be asked related questions to practice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of used to in the context of family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of mixed topics

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows some pictures and starts to make sentences with used to explaining her past habits, likes / dislikes.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows the second page of the presentation and asks students some questions related to the context at first step.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T writes a sentence on the board to highlight the structure. T may give examples for all forms to show how the structure changes.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

By back-chaining method, T shows all the forms on board ( affirmative, negative and question) and highlights pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-T asks students to listen to a track 2 times. -T supports her requests with CCQ. "How many times are we going to listen?" -Ss listen to the track and T asks if the characters gave up doing sport or not.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T shows the worksheet on board and asks Ss to complete the sentences as they wish. (They will have 5-7 minutes to do it. )

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T asks students to prepare 1 question with "used to" to ask one another. CCQ: How many questions are we going to prepare? They will have 2 minutes to do it.
