Description

Students try to suggest their definitions of culture, then read the text about two kinds of culture. Then they do an exam-type gapped text activity and practice applying the definitions of two types of culture to analyzing an Australian citizenship test. Followed up by a free discussion on which type of culture is more important.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Gestures in international context

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

To make students think for the word "culture" means. Elicit words connected with culture and write them on the blackboard.

While-Reading #1 (3-5 minutes) • Reading for gist

Sts read the text to see if their definitions are in the text.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • More detailed reading, with elements of text reference analysis

Sts complete the gaps in the text with the sentences given, justifying their suggestions.

Post-Reading (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Categorize the questions form a citizenship test for Australians into the 2 categories according to the definitions of the two types of culture in the text.

Free Practice (5-10 minutes) • Free production based on the topic and text discussed

Free discussion: Which kind of culture od you think is more important to learn about, culture with a capital C or culture with a small c?
