Description

In this lesson the student is familiarized with the concept of essay writing. The teacher provides information on the structure of essay, the introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs. The student then reads a sample writing task 2 with a sample answer and discusses the details and sentence structures before proceeding to write his own answer to the same task.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a opinion essay of agree or disagree in the context of obesity

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of present simple in the context of general statements
  • To provide clarification and practice of health vocabulary in the context of obesity

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher gives a full description of academic IELTS writing task 2 including the structure of the task which contains a statement and a question and the outline of an essay which includes introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs.

Exposure (14-18 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

The student is provided with a sample IELTS writing task 2 with the topic of obesity and the question type of agree/disagree and proceeds to read the sample answer and discuss the different aspects of the writing including the structure of the essay, coherence of the paragraphs and cohesion of the sentences in each paragraph.

Useful Language (14-16 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Cohesive devices used in the sample answer are highlighted by the teacher and discussed together with the students. Adverbs of sequence, conjunction of addition, contrast, result and reason are reviewed and clarified when necessary by the teacher.

Productive Task(s) (40-50 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Having covered the significant parts of the sample essay in discussion, the student then proceeds to write his own answer to the same task of writing but since this is his first time writing a full essay, the teacher asks him to write the essay paragraph by paragraph with no time limit. That way when each paragraph is completed, the teacher and the student review and discuss the paragraph in details with the teacher pointing out possible errors and opportunities to improve the essay.

Feedback and Error Correction (14-16 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Upon completing the essay, the teacher provides the student with a revised and improved version of his own writing and singles out points of difference between the two essays in order to clarify grammatical and lexical points for the student.
