Rituals-A Man and his Car
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students practice listening for detail in a text where a woman talks about her father's personal rituals. The lesson starts with a lead-in using realia to elicit distinction between personal rituals and cultural rituals. We then move to practice by listening to audio for detail and meaning, at least twice, maybe with chunking. This is followed by checking context and use of target language informal expressions with two fill in gap exercises and feedback. Wrap up with PW and WC speaking in context.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To help students practice listening for general meaning and for details in context of a woman talking about her father's rituals and his car.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice with target language informal expressions and opinions.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • to engage students through talking about local cultural rituals

Continue in context of rituals. With realia re-introduce local ritual of lemon water symbolizing hospitality and introduce ritual of removing shoes when entering a home and putting on slippers or covering shoes, honoring custom. Introduce personal hair care ritual.

Pre-listening (5-10 minutes) • introduce personal rituals

Have students talk about a parent's ritual, habit or practice that they think qualifies as a ritual.

Listening (10-15 minutes) • Listen for detail

Move to listening to audio. Give instructions before about 2 exercises that will follow. Listen first time for general meaning, do exercise 1 and 2. Listen a second time with pauses for expressions.

Target Language (5-8 minutes) • To practice talking about rituals

Give instructions for HO for target language practice. Working in pairs and then feedback correction with group participation. Those who finish early get a ENVELOPE with a jumbled sentence from last week when we did metaphors and word expressions.

Productive Task (3-5 minutes) • Speaking about rituals

Have students find general informal phrases that are used by Laura. Then proceed to fill in the gap with corresponding new sentences using these phrases. Final exercise to talk about personal rituals with partners in class.
