Materials

Abc Face to Face textbook

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of for voc

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To lead into the lesson, I will have the students answer a few questions pertaining to flights. 1. Are you afraid of flying? 2. When was the last time you took a flight?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will then choose 3 challenging words from the transcript and go over the meaning, form, and pronunciation, eliciting the meaning from the students first. 1. a corridor Noun, a long passage in a building or train, especially with rooms on either side. i.e. So I went through and there were two possible directions - one down some stairs and one along a corridor. 2. tarmac Noun, a brand name for a black material used for building roads, etc., that consists of tar mixed with small stones, or an area covered with this material i.e I went down the stairs and found myself on the tarmac and there was a small set of steps going up to the plane. 3. the ground crew Noun, the people at an airport who take care of the aircraft while it is on the ground i.e. Apparently I was trying to get in the door that ground crew use.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

I will the students listen to an audio exercise from the book Face to Face (CD 1, track 35). Giving the students a chance to listen to the audio, I will then conduct open class feedback on their answers. a Where was Gillian and why was she there? - She was in Poland, she was there for a meeting. b Why didn't she hear the announcement? -She didn't hear it because she was busy checking e-mails. c What did she do wrong? -She tried to use the wrong door to enter the plane. She was using the door the ground crews uses to communicate with the pilot. d. Why might the other passengers have been annoyed with her? -They missed their slot to take off because of her, and needed to wait another 45 minutes because of her.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed, deduction, and inference based listening task

I will then allow the listeners another opportunity to listen to the audio so they can answer a series T / F questions in regards to the audio. If the students need to listen twice, I will allow. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfYaSlLTUJbaeY0CVVhjDQK6NNCIMpXDnHLl763heUuFCzKlg/viewform The students will check their answers in break our rooms (groups of 3 or 4). TASK: Mark whether the statements are true or false, and correct the false ones. 1. Gillian caught her flight - T 2. She didn't have much time before her flight - F 3. She went to the wrong gate number - F 4. There wasn't anyone at gate 25 when she got there - T 5. When she went up the steps to the plane everything appeared normal - F 6. The security guards thought it was funny - F

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will then ask the students if they have had anything funny or unexpected happen at the airport. They will discuss in breakout rooms for 3-4 people for around 5 minutes before regrouping to talk as a class. I will listen and provide delayed error connection to finish the session.
