Listening Practice (TP 1)
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will practice listening via audio corresponding to their student workbook. The class will begin with a visual image from the SB and students will be asked questions about the possible topic of the text. Then, there will be a few vocabulary words listed for them to read, repeat, and attempt to define (the vocabulary will be defined by teacher). The audio will be played once (2minutes, 49 seconds) and will be asked to listen for specific information. This will be followed by open class feedback. After the OCFB, the audio will be played a second time. Students will respond (independently) to questions on Google Form, first, and then work in pairs on timed BORs. Lastly, the class will reopen to discuss the text and be provided with feedback.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for specific info and detail in the context of a new product launch.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of business environment words in the context of advertising, work, office, meetings

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Display a visual image of the lesson from the SB, on page 94, and ask learners what they believe the text is about.

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach vocabulary. I will choose three to four words that will be posted on a Google form for them to see and practice reading aloud. The students will be asked if any of the words are familiar. These vocabulary words will be defined and used in a sentence on the form. I will then ask students to practice their pronunciation, after I have said them aloud several times.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will be asked to listen to the text in order to get an idea about what is being discussed in the audio, and to note any specific information they can gather while listening.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (7-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will listen to the audio a second time, instructed to listen for specific information. Then, they will be prompted to answer questions about what they heard, on Google Forms.

Post listening task/Work in pairs (4-5 minutes) • To provide the students the opportunity to exchange ideas about the text and gather more detailed information.

Students will be paired up with other students to work in timed BORs. I will monitor to ensure they are discussing the assigned task.

Post-BORs (4-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

After closing BORs, I will begin open class feedback on the listening task, allowing students to respond to the audio text.
