TP2 Reading - 22nd April
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, Ss develop the listening subskills of gist and detail through an authentic text in the context of changing technology

Materials

Abc Forms Task 2

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about changing technology in the context of television

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of changing technology in the context of television
  • To provide fluency speaking practice related to the vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To begin the lesson, I will ask the Ss to predict the theme/topic by showing them 3 pictures of the evolution of the television. This will also help them in understanding the terms black and white tv, colour tv and smart tv/flatscreen. I will then ask the Ss to discuss another area of technology that has changed over time and how that has affected them. To help with understanding, I will ask CCQs and I will give a model answer on telephones. 3 mins in pairs 2 mins discussion OC

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

M&F I will choose 4 words from the text that may prove problematic for the Ss. I will ask them to line up against their relevant pictures. Record (verb) - Save for later Seventies (noun) - Period of time Live (adjective) - Happening now Explain (verb) - Give understanding To confirm understanding I will ask Ss to complete a fill in the blank task as OC. P - Line up the same words against their picture, then elicit syllables and stress of the words from the Ss. Use phonetics and rhyme to help with Live.

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Gist This will be a straight forward task of providing the text for the Ss to read. Once they have finished they will have to find 3 things that are mentioned in the text about how TV was different in the seventies. To confirm understanding I will ask 'Different in the seventies compared to when?' They will have 4 minutes to complete, 3 mins for discussion with a partner and 3 mins for OC feedback.

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Detailed We will continue straight away with the reading of the same text. They will also be given a link to a questionnaire on forms to complete while reading or after reading. How many children has Gavin got? When was Gavin a child? When did Gavin's family get their first colour TV? What did his family do that evening? What type of TV does Gavin have now? They will have 4-5 minutes to complete and 2-3 minutes for peer checking and 2 mins for OC feedback.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

To finish the lesson we will use a lucky dip style OC speaking task. The Ss one by one will choose a number from the jamboard. Behind the numbers are different topics or themes of technology. Each S must make 1 or 2 sentences about how this technology has changed from before to now. Once the S has finished their sentence(s) then the next S can pick a number. We will continue for 6-8 mins, leaving 2 mins for any DEC.
