Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will tell the students that I won the lottery over the weekend (show them a visual of a ticket), After this, I will show the students my PowerPoint and discuss two questions in an open class. 1) Do people in your country play practical jokes on one another? If so, what kind 2) Is there a special day in your country when people play practical jokes on each other? If so, when is it?

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will choose three challenging words and clarify the Meaning, Form, and Pronunciation on PowerPoint. 1. Drip (verb) 2. Whistling (gerund or present participle) 3. Nylon Stocking (noun) For Meaning, I will elicit from my students (also show visuals). For Form, I will elicit the Form from the students. For Pronunciation, I will have the students identify where's the stress, and how many syllables the words have and drill the sound with them.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will read the first paragraph of the article and answer the question. 1) What and when is April Fool's Day? I will give them 4 minutes to complete this task. Feedback – Students discuss their answers in open class (OCFB). Students will have 5 to 6 minutes for the discussion.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students read the rest of the article carefully and answer the following questions on Google Forms. I will give the students 6 mins to complete this. 1. why would the left-handed Whopper benefit left-handed people? 2. what would the whistling carrot tell you? 3 what illusion would the nylon stocking create? 4. why wouldn't you need a mouse or keypad with Mental Plex and Gmail Motion? Feedback – Students will check their answers in pairs via the Break Out Rooms (BORs). Students will have only 4 mins to complete this task. Feedback – Students will discuss their answers in open class (OCFB) with the teacher. The discussion will only take 5 mins.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will discuss the below question in the open class for only 2-3 mins. Do you know any other April Fool's Day stories that have been in the newspapers, online, or on TV? Then, In BOR in groups, students will discuss 3 questions related to the topic. This will be for 3 - 4 mins. The teacher will monitor for any language errors. 1. Do you like practical jokes? Why/ why not? 2. Did someone play a trick on you? What was it? 3. While many pranks are harmless, some are harmful. Give an example of a harmful prank. Feedback – Students discuss their answers in open class (OCFB). This task is for 3 mins. Teacher will write Language errors/good language on the screen. Elicit corrections from the students.
