Materials

Abc Lead in

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, Ss will have developed the listening subskills of gist and specific information in the context of biography.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of speaking fluency in the context of biographical information.
  • To provide clarification in the context of biography

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask the Ss about the word Biography. If no one knows, I will explain the definition and then ask the class to come up with things you would find in someone's biography. I will then put the students in pairs in breakrooms to ask each other 3 biographical questions for 3 minutes. We will then discuss some of the findings as a class for 2 minutes.

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

From the audio that will be used later in the lesson, I will choose 4 words that Spanish speakers commonly struggle with, then elicit the meaning and form from the students. To help with this I will use picture prompts for the correct word, multiple choice to determine the correct sentence and eliciting the stress and syllables of the word for pronunciation.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Explain task to SS - Display task grid to Ss. Explain the words on the left will appear in the audio clip. While they are listening, tick the words in the order they appear. Afterwards, place in to pairs in breakrooms to discuss their answers for 3 mins. Then discuss OC for 2 mins.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Screenshare slides to show demonstration of task. True or false on 6 statements from the same audio clip. Answer as you listen. When finished, again discuss in breakrooms for 2/3 minutes, then OC for 2/3 mins.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Based on the context of biographical information, ask the students to think of a famous person. Spend 2 minutes on google finding 3 or 4 facts about their life. In breakout rooms, in pairs give each other your 3 or 4 facts and try to guess each other's famous person. Use my own example on screenshare in slides. If there is time at the end cover 1 or 2 DEC
