Description

In this lesson, the student practices speaking in contexts of music, free time, helping others, celebrities, electronic device and education. The questions are general questions regarding his culture and society. After the initial stage of warm-up, the student watches two sample videos of IELTS speaking test part 3 and then practices with a range of general questions on the aforementioned topics. At the end of the lessons, he receives feedback on his answers regarding pronunciation, grammar structure and choice of vocabulary.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a General questions, discussion questions in the context of Celebrities, music, free time, helping others, electronic devices and education

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for Elaboration, exemplification and clarification in the context of Celebrities, music, free time, helping others, electronic devices and education

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The student is introduced to the IELTS speaking test part 3 by being asked some general questions on free time and music.

Exposure (30-45 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

The student watches two videos samples of ELTS speaking test part 3. The topics of the tests are "helping others" and "celebrities" in order. After watching each video, the student and the teacher discuss the candidates' replies, where they went wrong and where the answers were correct and to the point. The teacher's main focus is to get the student's attention to the way each candidate elaborates their answers using examples and explanation.

Useful Language (10-15 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

The teacher provides the student with samples of exemplification, explanation and clarification. Sentence structures necessary to achieve these tasks are revised and practiced by the student.

Productive Task(s) (30-50 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

After revising and practicing exemplification, explanation and clarification, the teacher proceeds to ask general questions of IELTS speaking test part 3 on topics of education, electronic devices, helping others and celebrities.

Feedback and Error Correction (10-15 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

In the last part of the lesson, the teacher works on the notes he takes on the student's performance during the production phase of the lesson. The main focus of the feedback is pronunciation, grammar structures and choice of vocabulary. The student is also given speaking test assignments for each of the week.
