Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of hypothetical possibilities with if

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will greet the students and ask them how they are feeling. After that, I will start the discussion by displaying a few pictures of people daydreaming about suggested or unreal situation and elicit the state of thinking about something not true or currently happening from students through the following questions: - What are they doing? Answer: Thinking - What are they thinking about? Answer: Things they want to do or situations they imagine - Are these situation true or currently happening? Answer: No - Can these situations happen? Answer: Yes After making sure the students got the idea clear, I will ask them to work in pairs so each one can share a few imaginary situations she/she thoughts about. Finally, students can share a few ideas with the rest of the class

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will teach the Pre-Teaching vocabulary before we move to the reading part. The vocabulary that will be taught is the following: - Poll (v) - Income (n) - Drink-drive All the above vocabulary should be clear to students because they will come across all of them throughout the lesson. Teaching the PTV will follow the ECDW order for each word as follows: - Showing a picture to help elicit the meaning - Drill the word through different drilling patterns with the class - Write the word on the board After that, I will provide the students with the reading text and ask them to read it individually in 1-2 minutes. Then I will ask them to discuss in pairs what would be different in Egypt. I will give them 3-4 minutes and then we will conduct some class feedback so students can share some of their ideas with the rest of the class

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

At this stage, I want to draw the students' attention to the modal verb would. So I will ask them to individually complete the questionnaire, which highlights the use of "would" in questions. I will give students 2 minutes to complete this exercise on their own. Then I will ask them to compare their answers in pairs

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

At this stage, I need to explain the meaning, form, and pronunciation of the target language. Starting with meaning, I will explain to the students that "would" can be used for hypothetical situations about the present of the future. Hypothetical situations are not real, true, or currently happening. Then comes the form, which I will be explain how to the structure the hypothetical sentence using modal verb would and "if". I will be mainly writing on the white board a few sentence and decode them as follows: I would hand in a walled if I found it [This sentence is divided into two clauses. One clause before "if" and another clause after "if"] - The first clause is composed of would + base verb - The second clause is composed of subject + past tense I will then write a few more examples on the white board for more clarification. - I would feel bad if my boss caught me texting - I would park in a wrong parking spot if there was an emergency Finally, I will be drilling the examples a few times in the class to cover the pronunciation. I will asl change the drilling patterns

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

At this stage, I will give the student the handout for ex 1 on page 97 and I will demo the first one with them. Then, I will ask to complete the rest of the exercise on their own in 3 minutes. After that, I will ask them to compare their answers together in pairs. Finally, I will display the answer key for the students to check their answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

At this stage, the students will practice using the modal verb would in a hypothetical sentence with "if". I will ask the students to discuss the list of questions in ex 2 (page 97) in groups for 5 minutes. Then, we will conduct a whole class feedback for a few minutes so students can share their thoughts and applied more practice of the target language.
