Science / Technology lesson
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the core vocabulary items related to science and technlogy through guided discovery based on a reading of three short texts about the topic mentioned above . The lesson starts with a brainstorming activity about vocabulary related to science and technology . This is followed by a predicting activity where students try to guess the topic of the texts . Intensive reading is the next stage where students will correct some false statements with details from the texts . Finally there is (summarizing ) followed by some controlled practise through table compeletion.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of science / technology vocabulary

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, scan, inference and summarizing sub skills using a text about a camera that can catch cancer , another text about the drawbacks of genetic engineering on food and a third text about the long-term threats of the mobile phone to health .

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To use visuals to introduce the topic of science and technology . Then draw two spidergrams one about science and the other about technology . Students (divided into two groups , one to brainstorm words about science and the other about technology .

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

A : Students try to predict the content of texts from three headlines : 1- Camera that can catch cancer 2- The genetically modified pea that causes allergies 3- Mobile phone safe B : Students skim the texts and match the headlines with the texts

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Students are divided into three groups to correct some false statements with details from the texts : G1-text A : a/ Has it been proved that mobile phones can cause brain cancer ? / justifiy b/ What resultats have scientists found ? c/ Does it mean that mobile phones are safe ? d/ How long could it take to prove that ? G2-text B : a/ what are the benefits of high-tech camera ? b/ What is the advantage of this ? c/ How long has the camera taken to be developed and used ? d/ How can hospitals benefit from it ? G3-text C : a/ Why has the project been abondned after ten years of study ? b/ what experiment was carried out to prove its inefficiency ? c/ What were the results ? d/ What do they prove ?

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

To complete 3 gapped texts with words from the texts . Extract 1 : Scientists dismissed people´s fears that mobile phones can ............. brain cancer ; nevertheless they haven´t ............ the possible ............. that the use of the mobile might cause . Extract 2 : Thanks to the hi-tech camera, doctors can now ..............malignant melanoma which is the .......... from skin to cancer . The earlier the disease is diagnosed , the easier it can be ............. . Extract 3 : Genetic modification applied to food may have ................ ............. for example the genetically-modified pea caused ............. when fed to mice , as it affected their ................ Speaking activity : what conclusion can you draw ?
