Main Aims

  • To provide clarification (guided discovery apporach) and practice of the present continuous in the context of noisy neighbours

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening for deduction: Ss will listen to some noisy neighbours and deduce what's happening in each apartment

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will first elicit the meaning of 'neighbour' from the Ss. Ss will discuss in pairs some questions regarding their neighbours, whether they have good or bad neighbours and why (adapted from exercise 1b). O/C feedback will then be provided.

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To highlight the issues people face with their noisy neighbours

Exercise 1a: I will elicit the meaning and form of some of the difficult words that the Ss might not understand (bark - argue) and drill these words. Reading for gist: Ss will have 1 minute to read the text and tell me afterwards why it's hard to love your neighbour (purpose of reading) and also elicit the adjective 'noisy'. I will then give the students 30 seconds to read the verbs and sentences before doing this exercise. Ss will do this exercise in pairs. Feedback: I will check the answers with the Ss and drill each sentence with them.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through an audio track

Exercise 2a: I will first give instructions and set the context. Ss will have 30 seconds to read the sentences. Ss will listen then to the audio and say what's happening in each situation first before matching each sentence with its picture. I will demo the first one with them. Ss will check in pairs. Then an answer key will be provided.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Exercise 2c: I will elicit from the Ss what the (+, -, ?) symbols mean: (positive form, negative form and question form). I will demo the first one in the negative and question form with them. Ss will do this exercise in pairs. An answer key will be provided. I will elicit the meaning and form using the white board. Finally, I will ask the Ss to flip their handouts and drill the sentences.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

6C, exercise b: I will set the context: This is a telephone conversation between a father and his son. 'A' is the father and 'B' is the son. Ss will work in pairs to put the verbs in brackets in the present continuous. I will demo the first one. An answer key will be provided.

Free Practice (8-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss are going to make a telephone conversation between two family members informing each other what their other family members are doing at the moment (using the present continuous tense). And I've added some words on the PPT to give them some ideas. I will demo a conversation with them first. Feedback: Content feedback: I will ask each pair what they discussed. Language feedback: During monitoring, I'll write down their mistakes they make regarding the present continuous and then write them on the board and ask them whether these sentences are correct or incorrect.
