Description

In this lesson, I will set the context of leisure briefly. After that, students will be given a matching activity on leisure vocabulary. When they finish, there will be a whole class feedback after a peer correction. Then, I will present the functional language of leisure and gerunds, and after that students will be given a gap -filling activity to practice the gerunds. Following the gap filling activity, there will be more examples of gerunds to introduce to the students the groups of the gerunds according to their spellings. Finally, they will be given a semi controlled speaking activity to make students talk about their leisure by using the gerunds. If time, there will be a 'Find Someone Who..' activity.

Main Aims

  • To introduce & give practice in the functional language of asking & answering/talking about leisure activities, and focus on form/use of gerunds in present tense in the context of leisure activities.

  • Writing to practice the form and use of gerunds
  • Speaking to practice the functional language of leisure activities & gerunds

Procedure

Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To introduce the vocabulary on leisure activities

I will talk about my leisure activities to set the context of leisure activities.

Matching Exercise (4-5 minutes) • Introducing some vocabulary on leisure activities.

I will ask Ss to do match the verbs with the nouns. I will ask them to do it individually, and after some ICQs (Are you going to do it in pais? No, Are you going to underline? No) I will distribute the matching HOs. When they finish I will ask for a peer check, then there will be a WC feedback on the board. Then I will ask more examples for the verbs in the matching exercise.

Practicing the leisure activities (3-4 minutes) • To make Ss to practice the functional language on leisure activities.

I will ask students to talk about their leisure activities with their partners, and when they finish I will ask some of them about their partners' leisure activities.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To introduce the gerunds

I will give some examples of things I like to do, and ask a few CCQs, and then I will write the sentences I said on the board using gerunds. Then I will elicit the parts of speech from the students and clarify that gerunds are verbs with -ing and they are nouns. Then I will show three examples on the board, and ask Ss, for the first example I will ask 'What is the subject?'; for the second and last ones, I will ask 'What comes before the gerund?', as in the first one, the gerund is the subject; in the second one, preposition comes before the gerund; and in the last example, verb comes before the gerund. After that, there will be some drilling for pronunciation.

Controlled Written Practice (3-5 minutes) • To make Ss practice the TL

I will give the instruction to Ss to do their tasks indiviually, then after asking ICQs will distribute the gap-filling HOs. When they finish there will be a pair check, and a WC feedback.

Controlled Written Practice (3-4 minutes) • To make Ss practice the different forms and spellings of gerunds.

I will tell Ss to write the noun forms of the verbs written o the worksheet by adding them -ing, and I will distribute the HOs. Then there will be a pair check, and a feedback on the w/b. After Ss write their answers on the board first I will do error correction.

Controlled Written Practice (5-7 minutes) • To make Ss practice form of gerunds

I will ask them to put the gerunds into three groups according to their spelling. I will show a demonstration on the board with 'cut' - 'cut-t-ing', 'play' - 'play-ing', and 'make' - 'mak-ing'. After they finish I will ask a peer correction, and then I will elicit and stick the flash cards of gerunds to make some pronunciation drilling.

Semi controlled speaking activity (5-6 minutes) • To make Ss use the TL

I will ask Ss to complete the sentences on the HOs using the gerunds so that they are true for them. And to talk with their partners.

If time Activity (6-7 minutes) • To make Ss practice the TL

I will distribute 'Find Someone Who..' HOs to the Ss to make them ask/answer questions about leisure activities they have learnt.
