TP8: Grammar (Text-based framework)
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about future with "be going to" through a guided discovery of a recycled reading about someone's vacation. The lesson starts with a lead-in reviewing some touristic places. There is a test on the structure followed by the presentation of the tense through the text (recycled reading from the previous class). To verify students understanding, there is a test after the guided discovery. Finally, the class ends in the creation of a travel itinerary in BORs before OCFB.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of future with be going to

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of touristic places vocabulary
  • To provide writing practice of a travel itinerary

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will play a memory game to review touristic places vocabulary from the previous lesson. This will be in WordWall and students will say which cards they want to pick.

Test #1 (3-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Students will individually complete a Google Forms quiz about the future with be going to. Afterwards there will be OCFB by asking students to share their answers and then showing the correct answer.

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I will show the example postcard from the previous lesson and point out the marker sentence "Tomorrow we're going to watch a show at a theatre on Broadway." CCQS: - Did they decide to do the action before or when they said it? - Is it talking about the past, present or the future? - Do we use be going to as a way to talk about future plans or things we do every day? I will show Ss two columns where they will differentiate the examples, structure and use for present continuous tense and future with be going to. There will then be an individual drill and choral drill of sentences using the future with be going to.

Test #2 (5-7 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Students will individually complete a Google Forms quiz about the future with be going to. Afterwards there will be OCFB by asking students to share their answers and then showing the correct answer in an example itinerary which leads to the free practice.

Free practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will show the example of the postcard side-by-side with the example of the itinerary and use CCQs to check students understand the difference between the product from the previous lesson (postcard) and the product from this lesson (itinerary). CCQs: - Is the postcard (from the previous lesson) the same structure as the itinerary? No - Does the itinerary mention the past, present or future? The future I will then proceed to show students the template they are going to use and ask ICQs before sending Ss to BORs. ICQs: - How can we identify the slide our team is going to edit? In the corner you can find the room number same as the BORs - What information are we going to add? The destination, the dates and specific activities - What tense are we going to use? Future with be going to
