Description

In this lesson, the students will practice their reading skills. The lesson will start with a discussion about weekend city break. The teacher will present new vocabulary and the students will practice it during the whole lesson by reading a text and doing activities. Then the learners will practice some semi-controlled speaking in the context of weekend city break. At the end of the lesson the teacher will get feedback and write some students’ mistakes on the white board to correct them together with learners.

Main Aims

  • To practice reading skills. By the end of the lesson the students should be able to speak about the text using new vocabulary in the context of weekend city break. Be aware that the learners are from different language background and they may not understand meanings of new words, instructions etc. Try to give clear and simple instructions and use clear descriptions of new words they don't know.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide semi-controlled speaking in the context of weekend city break.
  • Try to get information from the students which words they already know. Present new words in clear and simple way. Also resent new vocabulary from the text while doing pre-reading activities.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To introduce the topic (weekend city break)

The teacher will start the lesson with the questions like 'Who does like to go for vocation?', 'Where do you like to have vacation?', 'What do you do for weekends?', 'Do you like to walk around the city?', 'Do you like to visit different cities?' etc. Then the teacher will tell a short story about his/her favorite city showing different pictures. After he/she finish he/she will ask the students to work in pairs and tell each other about their favorite cities and what they like the most about them.

Vocabulary (6-8 minutes) • To review and present new vocabulary

The teacher will put pictures on the WB to present new vocabulary in the context of weekend city break (a train station, a hotel, a bridge, a river, etc.). He/she will check which words are familiar for the learners and which need to be presented. To present the new word, the teacher will use a description and make the learners to guess a word. The teacher will ask some CCQs like 'Where do people wait for a train?', 'Where you can go and see some paintings?' ect. The teacher will drill new vocabulary too.

Practice of new vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To practice new vocabulay in different context

The students will be asked to do a matching activity. They need to do this activity individually. After they finish, they can check in pairs their answers and then, the teacher will write the answer key on the WB. Then the teacher will ask student to write 3 sentences using new words. After they finish they need to read their sentences to their partner (PW).

Pre-reading (5-7 minutes) • To set up the context and present new vocabulary

The teacher will ask the students a question 'Did you go to Barcelona or Prague?' Then the teacher will show pictures to present some places in these cities. He/she will tell some information about each picture to help them to understand the text better. Then the teacher will present some new words from the text (weekend break, to go for a walk, statue and a puppet show).

While-reading (8-10 minutes) • Practice of reading skills and new vocabulary

The teacher will give students instructions how to do exercise 'Mark the sentences B for Barcelona and P for Prague' and ask some ICQs. Then he/she will ask them to read a text practicing their reading for full comprehension and answer do an exercise. After the learners finish they can check answers in pairs. Then the teacher will write answers on the WB. After this exercise the students will be given an exercise sheet with exercise to choose the correct answer. The learners will practice their scanning skills.

Post-reading (5-7 minutes) • To check if the students have understood the text and can practice speaking in the concept of hope

The teacher will ask students some question about the text like 'What can you visit in Barcelona?', 'What can you visit in Prague?', 'Where can you go for a walk in Barcelona?', 'Where can you walk in Prague?', 'Where is the oldest castle?' etc. He/she will try to check if the students know new vocabulary and are familiar with the text. Then the teacher will ask students to work in pairs and discuss in which city they would like to spent their weekend break. The teacher will monitor and write some common mistakes for the further error correction part of the lesson.

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To get a feedback and correct sommon mistakes

The teacher will ask the students some question to get a feedback. Then he/she will write some common mistakes and try to make students to correct them.

Extra activities (3-5 minutes) • To practice new vocabulary in the context of weekend city break

The teacher will give the students the exercise sheet with questions. They need to write aswers in the context of weekend city break.
