Description

In this lesson, learners will focus on the spelling of vocabulary in the context of favourite seasons. Then, they will do a jig-saw reading activity where they read texts about people's favourite seasons. Finally, they write an informal e-mail about their favourite seasons.

Main Aims

  • • Pupils will be able to do a jig-saw reading activity in the context of weather and seasons and write an informal e-mail about their favourite season.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • Pupils will be able to consolidate the spelling of vocabulary in the context of seasons. Pupils will be able to read a text about favourite seasons for gist and details.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students. To consolide the spelling of lexis that pupils will use in the writing activity.

Teacher writes on the board the set of letters E- A - O - S - S- N- S and the set of letters R- W- H- E- T- A - E on the board. Teacher asks pupils to unscramble the two words . Pupils give feedback. Teacher elicits the two words SEASONS / WEATHER . These are examples which leads pupils to the next activity. While pupils give answers the teacher draws a table of 5 columns and two lines on the board. She writes the word on the first column. Then, she provides pupils with a worksheet including pictures and asks pupils to work in pairs to unscramble the words inorder to label the pictures. Teacher gets feedback from pupils , corrects pronunciation mistakes and complete the table with the unscrambled words about seasons and weather. To personalise the topic and check pupils understanding, teacher asks pupils CCQS. How many seasons are there in your country? Is it hot today? Is it sunny? Is it cloudy? What's the weather like today?

Pre-Reading/Listening (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher asks pupils to describe pictures and talk about activities people can do in different seasons inorder to elicit vocabulary pupils may need in the reading comprehension activity.

While-Reading (7-9 minutes) • To read a text about people favourite seasons for gist and details.

Teacher provides each pair with a worksheet which includes a reading comprehension activity. Every worksheet includes a different text and comprehension questions so pupils do a jig saw reading activity. First, pupils read the text in pairs and circle the suitable title of the text. Pairs exchange their feedback. Second, pupils re read the text in pairs and answer a true/false question. Pairs exchange feedback. Finally, pupils re read the texts in pairs and complete a table with detailed information. Pairs exchange feedback. Teacher provides an answer sheet for all pupils including the four texts, the questions and the answers.

Post-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and write about their favourite seasons.

Teacher hands out a worksheet including the questions : What's your favourite season? Why do you love that season? What do do in that season? Pupils ask and answer the above questionsin pairs to pave the way for the writing activity. Teacher asks each pupil to write a short e-mail to her classmate about her favourite season. Teacher asks pupils to exchange their first draft of writing with their peers. After peer correction, pupils write their final draft at home taking into consideration their peer feedback.
