Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about home food vs fast food in the context of comparing between two things.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of food vocabulary/comparative words in the context of comparing between two things.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. In pairs, the students will compare the pictures on the first page of the handout. 2. The students will share their answers and briefly describe the pictures with the teachers.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. In pairs, the students will read question number 1. 2. The students will return to the text to answer the question. 3. Share your answers with the teacher.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. In pairs, the students will underline the opposite words. 2. Write them down. 3. Share your answers with the teacher.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. In pairs, read question number 2. 2. Return to the text and underline the similarities and differences. 3. Fill in the Venn diagram. 4. Share your answers with the teacher.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

At this stage, the teacher will free talk with the students about their favourite food and eating habits.
