Functional language to show interest

Description

In this lesson, Ss practise using functional language to show interest. Ss will begin by asking the T some basic questions following a structure, and asked to choose an appropriate reaction. Next Ss will watch a variety of film clips, showing the TL expressions being used, and as a whole class will select the meanings of the expressions heard. Finally, they will work in pairs and small groups to tell three things, one surprising, one sad and one ordinary statement, to which their partner must react.

Main Aims

  • To provide conversational practice using follow-up questions to personal anecdotes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by showing Ss four pictures of activities and nominate Ss individually to ask me questions about those activities (using prompts on-screen), after my response they will choose an appropriate response, to show interest/sympathy etc.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

In this stage, Ss will be shown short video clips containing the TL, after a few of each there will be a comprehension question about meaning which we will answer as a whole class. I will encourage them to make a list of all the adjectives they hear with 'wow, '.

Productive Task(s) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will be given 6 minutes to work in pairs or small groups in BORs and take turns to tell their partner 3 things: something good, something bad and something surprising. Partners will choose appropriate responses.

Productive task 2 (10-12 minutes) • To get students talking in groups using TL and follow-up questions

Ss will be shown a few follow up questions and asked to fill the gaps as a whole class group. Next, they will be out into BORs again and given 4-6 mins to do a conversational task where one person answers the question, and the other two respond appropriately.

Feedback and DEC (2-5 minutes) • To provide delayed correction and feedback on use of TL

Show Ss examples of expressions I heard used and check if they agree appropriacy. Provide additional vocab and examples as required.
