Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Airbnb
  • To provide fluency speaking practice about different types of accomodation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T puts ss in groups of 5 and gives a card to each group. On the card, they are given a type of travel and two options for accomodation. They choose one of the options and discuss the reasons for their choice in 3 mins. Then the T asks groups which one they choose and why. In the last group's card, there is an option of Airbnb, which is the topic of the reading lesson. T asks ss what they know about Airbnb.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The T shows ss the introductory paragraph on p.81 about Airbnb. T asks ss to read it and decide on the best summary. There are three options. T asks groups to choose one and write their choice (1,2 or 3) at the back of the card they have just used in the lead-in stage. When time is up, T asks groups to raise their papers to check the answers.

While-Reading #1 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss read the text and answer the questions on Socrative. They work in groups. The T shows their answers on the board and they check the answers all together.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T asks ss the advantages and disadvantages of being an AIRBNB host. T asks groups to find one for each and write on Wooclap to prepare a word cloud. After they create the word cloud, T asks ss to read the posts written by the hosts and check if their ideas are mentioned.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The T gives different identities to the groups (a university student, a newly wed couple, a retired elderly couple, a family with 4 children) and shows them 4 alternative Airbnb places to stay. T asks them which one they would choose and why. They finish the class in a way they started. The T notes down the mistakes while students are presenting what they have discussed. If time allows, T writes the mistakes on the board and asks ss to correct them to provide them with immediate feedback.
