Procedure

intro • to introduce the context and the theme for the reading exercises

put a picture of Nelson Mandela on the board. say things like, 'who is this?', 'this is Nelson Mandela', 'what do you know about Nelson Mandela?', 'we're going to read [a text] about Nelson Mandela now'. Then give them the handout.

P.48 Exercise 2 (5-11 minutes) • To give the students reading practice

Give the students the handout and have them do exercise 2. For the instructions, you could say something like "Okay, read the text now. And while you're reading, fill in the gaps with the dates and numbers from this box here." Try to verify that they've understood and are following the instructions and give them some time to do the exercise. Then put the answers on the board.

P.48 Exercise 3 (4-12 minutes) • To give the students practice reading for chronology

Have the students do exercise 3. "Okay, now read the text again. And while you're reading, look at the sentences in exercise 3 and put them in the correct order." Try to verify that they've understood and are following the instructions. Maybe demonstrate with the first two events. Give them some time to do the exercise, then put the answers on the board.

Have the students do exercise 4, in pairs. Put the answers on the board or a handout.

Have students do exercise 6, in pairs. Then put the answers on the board
