Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice modal verbs and phrases to talk about levels of certainty about the future.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of modal verbs and phrases for future certainty and practice fluency speaking.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Use slide 1 to show pictures of different people with dyed hair. Ask Ss the following questions: 1. What do you think of dyed hair? 2. Is it appropriate for all types of work?

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will listen to a conversation between Sarah, Mickey and Beatrice. With this audio they will be exposed to the TL. They will listen and answer 2 questions shown in slide 2 (adapted from Face2Face upper intermediate SB page 50 ex. 3): 1.What does Mickey think about Beatrice's hair? 2.Why is Beatrice going to Ireland and how does she feel about it? Conduct feedback.

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show students slide 3. The TL is highlighted in a set of sentences from the audiobook. Work as a whole class to elicit the TL meaning and pronunciation.

Clarification (11-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

On slide 4 show students the TL phrases, ask them to match the sets of sentences to the different categories according to their meaning. After that, ask students to pay attention to how the phrases are used to work on form. They need to say which sentences they think go with the infinitive and which are followed by subject + will + infinitive. Highlight the verb to be in some of the phrases since students are prone to forget it. Adapted from Face2Face upper intermediate SB page 51 ex. 5 b + page 141.

Controlled Practice (8-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Show students slide 5. They will see only the 1st sentence they have to paraphrase to do it as an example all together. Share google forms link in the chat. Ask Ss to paraphrase the sentences using the words in brackets. (adapted from ex. 7a page 51 from face2face upper intermediate SB) Allow 4 min. Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Show students slide 7. Tell them they are going to talk about their own predictions using the TL. Send HO 1 through the chat. Students work in BORs to use the TL fluently. The teacher monitors. (allow 4 minutes) After this, DEC is conducted.
