Description

To provide listening practice for specific information and detail in the context of men vs. women.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for specific information and detail in the context of men vs. women.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students the chance to develop top-down and bottom-up listening processes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Set a context for the listening and get students engaged with the topic of the listening before they hear the text by using top-down processing. To do this I show students slide 1 where there are pictures of different men/women stereotypes/myths and ask what they represent to brainstorm background knowledge.

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

2. Explain to students that they are going to listen to a text about men and women but that first they need to know some essential words in order to understand the listening better. Work as a whole class. Show students slide 2. Ask student to read and match. Work on Meaning, Form and Pronunciation.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

3. Tell Ss they will hear an audio and are expected to listen for specific information. Tell them they are going to listen to Naomy, Polly and Matt discussing about the roles of men and women. Show them 5 sentences in slide 3. Read them. Check they understand the sentences. Send HO1 through the chat. Ask them to listen and put the sentences in order they hear them. Show answer in slide 4 to do OCFB. (Source: Face2Face upper intermediate SB page 85 activity 4a)

While-Reading/Listening #2 (13-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

4. Tell students they are going to listen again for more detail. Use slide 5 to show them the questions they have to answer. Read the questions and check if they understand them. Play the recording and answer the 1st one with them as an example and check together. Share the link on Google forms (do not ask to submit). Play the rest of the recording for Ss to answer on their own. LINK: https://forms.gle/vjjg1K53gkg7gjVUA 5. Put students in BORs to check the answers in pairs. Monitor each room to see if the audio needs to be played again before OCFB. Allow 4 minutes. Ask to submit. Conduct OCFB showing the answers in slide 6.

Post-Reading/Listening (7-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

6. Have learners respond to the contents of the text. Ask: in what ways do you think men and women behave differently? Think about their attitudes to the following things (adapted from Face2Face upper intermediate SB page 85 activity 6a): Show the words in slide 7 family - friends - cooking - sports - money - house work. Share HO2 and put students in BORs for 4 minutes. 7. Ask Ss to share ideas. Conduct OCFB. 8. Conduct DEC.
