SS learn how to use basic personality characteristics to describe (using verb "to be") people

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of people's basic personality characteristics (eg., nice, cool, cute,...) in the context of family relationships
  • To provide clarification and review of family relationships in the context of a family tree

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a monologue in the context of picture description of people and their characteristics

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Pictionary/mimics about personality traits (nice/not very nice, wonderful, kind, cool, lovely, easy-going, happy, intelligent, clever, cute, difficult, selfish, horrible, stupid)

Task (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target vocabulary about family and diagnose learning needs.

Ask the questions: Do you have pictures of people in your cellphone? Who are they?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Play the conversation audio. Analyze the conversation with SS about: work/school/home situations (eg., busy, relaxed, stressful) and expand their vocab. Social events (eg., birthday party, meeting, BBQ) Social Relationships (eg., roommates, friends, acquaintances, family -father, mother,...-) Basic characteristics to describe people (nice, kind, cute, cool, etc.)

Planning (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

(Re)introduce the task on page 4. Give them time to prepare their picture descriptions using the new words and chunks.

Task repetition (5-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target vocabulary and phrases to describe people using basic characteristics

SS show their pictures to their partnerts, describing who the people in them are and what they are like. T monitors noticing learners needs, good language use and language that needs reformulation.

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

T uses English Vocabulary in Use to Clarify/expand common adjectives to describe people, and family relationships.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

SS Practice fill-in the gap activities and complete the activities on Platform.
