Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a (short) formal letter complaining about poor hotel service.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and review of grammar with writing a formal letter about complaining poor hotel service.
  • To provide practice of vocabulary with format of formal letter writing in the context of poor hotel service

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask students a question Where will you go for a vacation? and i will give an example to elicit from students.

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will show students to my short formal letter and ask them read it and answer the questions. 01. What is about? 02. Who is it for? 03.What are the reasons for a complain?

Layout Analysis (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students to identify the sections of the piece of writing

I will display the( short) formal letter with labelled format and asked students If they have any questions of them. I will ask students to matching the each parts of the formal letter and match the answers eliciting from students. I will ask them Is this letter formal or informal? Why?

Language Analysis (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful languages for coming productive task.

Greeting (Salutation) Meaning- It Often begins with personal salutation with either first and/or last name " Dear Sam" or a job tittle "Dear Manager" Does formal letter need greetings? yes, use formal salutation. Salutation and Greetings: are they same? the meaning pretty much the same, A salutation is a form of greeting. Hey there! is this formal or informal? Informal. Subject (Introduction sentence) Meaning- Topic of the letter. It comes between the salutation and the body of the letter. What is the purpose of this? eliciting from Students. Is this formal or informal? Is this essential to use? I will ask students to create a subject as an example. Body Meaning- main content of the letter. I will elicit from students the body of formal letter that I used with them. Form: "I am writing.... " I will show students the form of this and elicit some examples from them. "We had .... " I will show students the form of this and elicit some examples from them. "I hope...." I will show students the form of this and elicit some examples from them. Closing Meaning- a word or phrase used before signature to indicate farewell. Shows respect and appreciation for the recipient. synonymy- faithfully, best regards Cordially Signature (Sign-off) Meaning: End of the letter it mentions who it's from.

Independent Writing Task (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target writing skills

I will show students a task to do: write a (short) formal letter to complain about something. I will give them some examples ideas. ICQs: will this letter be formal or informal? Formal Are you going to write a letter a short form ? Yes Can you use greeting" Hi there! "in formal letter? No Let students ten minutes for independent writing.

Peer Practice (5-7 minutes) • To allow students to give and receive writing feedback

I will provide students feedback checklist and ask them to share their answers with friends. I will send them to BORs and ask them to give each other feedback after using checklist. I will monitor them in BORs.
