Description

In this lesson, students revise and consolidate their skills on the forms of obligation and permission in English grammar with modal verbs as have to, must, can and their negatives in present tense. They practice them under controlled activities and in a follow-up production stage in writing rules for a community they describe with these forms (You can do this... but you mustn't do that... etc.)

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and production of obligation and permission forms in present tense in the context of community living.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation for community rules and types.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Referring to the reading in the previous lesson, students will be asked to give their opinions about the community rules in that lecture. Their use of obligation and permission rules will be asked to clarify the target language: for "must", "obligation"; for "can", "permission" will be elicited at this stage.

Presentation (8-12 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through a matching exercise

Give groups of 3-4 students (mix students with those they do not normally sit next to) each clipped strips of the sentences with grammatical forms from the reading and ask to match them sticking on the wall. Each group will see and check others' matchings too. Give them the ans key sticked somewhere else on the wall and let them check their answers. While they are checking, draw on wb a table with the meanings of the forms and ask them afterwards to write below them the corresponding grammatical forms. (As in Ss book ex 1, nos 1-4). Ask CCQs to be sure about each form.

Practice (12-15 minutes) • Practice the recently revised and clarified grammatical forms.

Cut the document into two from above the exercise 3. Show groups of students of 4 the picture on the document. (Reunite the groups). Tell them that they are going to create their own community. They should first give it a name (as Paradise Ridge in the reading). Ss will decide about what kind of a community it is, what are its characteristics. (one of them will write).

Production (9-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to produce sentences in a semi-controlled activity

Give students the other half of the document and ask them to write rules for this community. Tell them to stick their "Community Declaration" on the wb once they finish. Monitor them. When all of them are hang on the wb, tell the students to come and choose which one is the best choice to live in.
