Description

In this lesson students will be introduced to how to write a biography and will be given the opportunity to write their own biographies for practice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a biography in the context of people students admire.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To practice students skills in reading for gist by identifying the different parts of a biography. • To practice students skills in reading for detail by identifying language used in the biography.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. T asks SS about their weekend and nominates 1-2 SS to get their answers. 2. T asks SS if they practiced their English during the week and nominates 2 SS to get their answers. 3. T shares the screen and shows the first slide of the Canva presentation with the dynamic: "Who am I?" 4. T presents some short descriptions of a famous singer and SS try to guess who it might be 5. T selects 3-4 students to share their deductions

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

6. SS will be provided with a sample biography about Johnny Deep's life. 7. SS will be asked to read the text and to match the stages of the biography to the topics it mentions. They will have 4 minutes 8. SS do the task during the assigned time 9. After that SS will receive the task solution to check. 10. T asks if there is any question before moving to the next stage.

Useful Language (7-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

11. T will share the screen of the Canva Presentation with the Useful Language from the text 12. T asks SS what they think adverbs are useful for and makes them decide the most propper definition. 13. T selects the correct use of the adverbs in a writing 14. T gives 1 minute to SS so they can match the adverbs to similar words or expressions. 15. T shows the answer key of the task 16. T asks SS: "Do you have any questions?" " Is everything clear?"

Productive Task(s) (24-25 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

17. SS will now be given a prompt to write their biographies (in word, google docs. etc.) 18. T instruct SS: " Now you will write a biography about the person who you admire most. It could be a writer, actor, singer, politician or someone you know. For doing this, you will have 15 minutes" 19. SS do the task during the assigned time 20. After this, T instructs SS: "Now you will be split into BoR to share your biographies with each other. (Sharing the screen) and giving feedback to your partners. For this, you will have 10 minutes" 21. If there is sufficient time SS will change partners once and do the same again.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

22. T nominates 1 SS of every breakout room to share their biographies and comment on the work of their peers. 23. T comments and reacts about the pieces of writing of the SS 24. T copy-pastes the phrases collected during monitoring and put them on the Canva Presentation. 25. T asks the SS to improve or correct those phrases by following the dynamic "Hospital for sentences" 26. SS will pretend they are doctors and have to operate sentences. Each incorrect sentence will first go through the emergency room, then they will be transferred to the operating room to be corrected and finally when the sentences have improved they will go to the recovery room. 27. After finishing the error correction, T says goodbye to the students and thanks them for their presence.
